Project MR2 - Planning

Now that we've established what I'm shooting for I better have a plan for getting there that doesn't take me the rest of my life. I've got a couple of different individual projects planned, one of which is already in progress, that I need to complete before I'll be ready to call the MR2 finished. I reserve the right to change the order or content of these at pretty much any time, but for now here's what I'm thinking:

Project 1: Death to Smurfy (In progress): Fixing the interior of the car. The objective of this is mostly to get rid of the blue, but also to try and update the look of the interior to some degree.  We're going to have to come back to this one down the road because there are certain things I'd like to do on the interior that I really can't and shouldn't try prior to completing a few other projects.  I'd like to incorporate a GPS nav screen into the dash and change out the OEM gauge cluster for something custom but I think that's a bad idea until I've got the engine work completed.

Project 2: Koji Destroy's a Lexus.  Hillarity Ensues:  I recently picked up a T-boned Lexus ES300 for a pittance because I'm going to pull out the V6 and throw it into the MR2.  Yes it's possible and it's been done multiple times. There's plenty of good parts on the car so I should be able to get most if not all of the money I spent on the vehicle out of it which is good since I want to finish the MR2 on a strict budget.  Much like I've always wanted to build a car, I've always wanted to destroy one as well, so after I get everything off that's saleable I'm going to really enjoy hacking the thing to pieces with my circular and reciprocating saws.

Project 3: MR2 - FA:  This one is going to be a love/hate project for the MR2 community but they'll get over it once I'm done.  Since I'm trying to rethink what an MR2 would look like if it were alive today I have to re-do almost the entire exterior.  The pop-up headlights will have to go, along with most of the other body panels, which will be replaced by fiberglass pieces I'm going to mold and make myself.  Personally I think the MR2 wouldn't be a notch back if it were still in production so I'm going to build a fast back and then also pull a ton of styling ques from the Lexus LFA.

The LFA is a Halo car, and I don't mean Master Chief's Warthog.  This typically means that styling and technological elements from the Halo car trickle down the line to other vehicles the company makes.  I can't crib the technology but I can take some styling.  The trick is to incorporate themes from the LFA without blatantly ripping it off.  They need to look like siblings, not twins.

Before you go calling me a ricer, understand that I'm not making a body kit.  I'm making a new body.  Making a new body means that I actually think about and build out pieces specifically to serve certain functions and anything on the car needs to serve a purpose.  I'm not putting on a front bumper with massive holes that don't go anywhere.  Once that purpose has been served then I worry about what it looks like.

This project will piss people off even more because I'm going to build out the molds and body panels but not take it to the paint shop till I'm done with everything else because I really don't want to knick the crap out of it while I'm dropping in a V6.

Project 4: MR6 FTMFW!!!:   The V6 has to go in at some point.    Just throwing it in and getting it running should be interesting but I also want to weld my own exhaust.  This is another one of those things I've yet to do that's on my "25 Ways" list.

Project 5: Wheels/Tires/Suspension/Brakes:  Normally I'd do this first on a project car but since I don't know what the final configuration and balance of the vehicle will be I pretty much have to do it last.

Project 6: Details, details:  Paint, and other finishing items to get the thing ship shape.

Project 7: Forced Induction:  I want a turbo or supercharger of some kind.

I'm sure I'll come up with other stuff as I go but that's the plan for now.
